How to read absorption & stacked imbalances on NinjaTrader 8

Absorption: one side keeps hitting, the other side keeps taking it, and price refuses to move.
Absorption: one side keeps hitting, the other side keeps taking it, and price refuses to move.

Absorption and stacked imbalances are the two footprint reads that most reliably mark where a move is about to turn or accelerate. Here is how to spot them on NinjaTrader 8 and how to combine them with delta.

What absorption looks like

Absorption is when aggressive orders keep hitting one side and price refuses to move. The resting liquidity is eating the aggression. On the footprint you see volume stacking at a high or low while price holds. Sellers keep lifting offers into a high but it won’t break; buyers keep hitting the bid at a low but it holds. The aggressor is spending and getting nothing. That exhaustion is often the seed of a reversal.

Single vs. stacked imbalance

A single imbalance is one price level where buy or sell aggression outguns the other side 2:1 (the 0.682 diagonal ratio). A stacked imbalance is three or more of those in a row, same direction: sustained, one-directional pressure. Stacked imbalances into a level frequently mark where price either breaks through with force or exhausts and snaps back.

Putting it together: the reversal read

The highest-confidence reversal reads line up three things at a level:

  1. Absorption: one side eating the other, price holding.
  2. Stacked imbalance failing. Aggression that should have broken the level but didn’t.
  3. Delta divergence: price makes a new extreme but cumulative delta does not confirm.

When all three appear at a session high or low, you have a textbook capitulation-low or blow-off-high read.

Two common scenarios

Capitulation low: price flushes down, sell aggression spikes, but the bid absorbs it and delta starts diverging up. The sellers are exhausted.

Blow-off high: price spikes up on stacked buy imbalances, the offer absorbs the last push, and delta fails to make a new high with price. The buyers are exhausted.

The trap to avoid

Absorption is only meaningful with real volume behind it. A quiet level holding on light volume is not absorption. It is just nobody trading. Always confirm with total volume and delta before you read exhaustion into it.

Frequently asked questions

What is absorption in order flow?
Absorption is when aggressive orders repeatedly hit one side and price doesn’t move. Resting liquidity is absorbing the aggression. Stacking volume at a high or low while price holds often precedes a reversal.
What is a stacked imbalance?
Three or more consecutive 2:1 imbalances in the same direction on the footprint, signalling sustained one-sided pressure. Stacked imbalances into a level often mark acceleration or exhaustion.
How do I confirm a reversal with order flow?
Look for three things lining up at a level: absorption, a failing stacked imbalance, and delta diverging from price. The more that align, the stronger the read. Always with real volume behind it.
Can I see absorption automatically on NinjaTrader 8?
Yes. Imprint Flow flags absorption and single/stacked imbalances directly on the footprint as they print, so you don’t have to eyeball every cell.

Risk Disclosure: Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing one’s financial security or lifestyle. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

Hypothetical Performance Disclosure: Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. For example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program despite trading losses are material points that can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program that cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all of which can adversely affect trading results.
