How to read order flow & footprint charts on NinjaTrader 8

Order flow starts here: the bid/ask split inside every bar, at every price.
Order flow starts here: the bid/ask split inside every bar, at every price.

A green candle tells you buyers won the bar. It does not tell you how: whether they overpowered real supply, or whether one block trade flipped the color with nobody behind it. Order flow shows the difference. This is the practical version: what to look at on a NinjaTrader 8 footprint, and how to read it.

What order flow actually is

Order flow is the record of who traded, at what price, and on which side (bid or ask) inside each bar. A standard candlestick collapses all of that into four numbers (open, high, low, close). A footprint chart keeps it: it shows the bid and ask volume transacted at every individual price level within the bar. That is the raw picture of participation, and it is where the edge lives for ES and NQ day traders who need to see what happened before the candle closed.

Anatomy of a footprint bar

  • Per-level volume: each price row shows volume that hit the bid (sellers) on one side and the ask (buyers) on the other.
  • Relative volume: brighter or larger cells mark where activity spiked.
  • Highlights: imbalances and absorption are flagged directly on the cells.
  • Delta grid: a strip under the bar showing net delta (buy minus sell), delta percentage, and total volume.

The five signals that matter

You do not need to read every number. You need five things:

  1. Footprint: the bid/ask volume map itself.
  2. Single imbalance (2:1). One side outguns the other 2:1 (the 0.682 diagonal ratio) at a price level: a footprint of aggression.
  3. Stacked imbalance. Three or more imbalances in a row, same direction: sustained one-sided pressure that often marks where price accelerates or exhausts.
  4. Absorption. One side keeps hitting and the other side eats it: volume stacks but price holds at a high or low. A classic reversal tell. (We cover this in depth in reading absorption & stacked imbalances.)
  5. Per-bar + cumulative delta: net buy/sell pressure per bar and across the session. Delta diverging from price (price up, delta down) warns the move lacks real participation.

How to actually use it at a level

When price reaches a level you care about, run a four-question check:

  • Is one side absorbing the other?
  • Are imbalances stacking into the level?
  • Is delta diverging from price?
  • Is there real participation, or did one block trade do the work?

The more "yes" answers, the stronger the read. None of this is a signal to blindly act on. It is context that makes your own decision better.

The #1 trap

A single large trade can flip a bar's color with no real participation behind it. Always confirm with delta and total volume before you trust the candle. This is the single most common mistake new order-flow traders make.

What you need on NinjaTrader 8

Order flow requires a data feed that provides Level 2 / DOM data: Rithmic, CQG, Kinetick, or Interactive Brokers L2 all work. You do not need NinjaTrader Lifetime: the free NT8 license that comes with any funded-account or brokerage connection is enough to run a footprint indicator. If you want this rendered cleanly and automatically (imbalances and absorption highlighted the moment they print), that is exactly what Imprint Flow does.

See it live

Imprint Flow surfaces all of this automatically.

Footprint, single & stacked imbalances, absorption, and per-bar delta. Rendered live on your NinjaTrader 8 chart. From $29/mo. All sales final.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Level 2 / DOM data feed to read order flow?
Yes. Footprint and delta require a NinjaTrader 8 feed that provides Level 2 / DOM data. Rithmic, CQG, Kinetick, and IB L2 all qualify. The free NT8 license is sufficient. No Lifetime license needed.
Is order flow only useful for scalping?
It is most useful for short-term ES/NQ day traders and scalpers who act at specific levels, but swing traders use cumulative delta and absorption at session highs/lows to time entries too.
Does the footprint repaint?
No. A footprint records what actually traded at each price. It is a record, not a prediction. It does not repaint.
Footprint vs. the DOM: what’s the difference?
The DOM shows resting orders (intent). The footprint shows executed trades (what actually happened). They’re complementary; order-flow readers lean on the footprint for confirmation.

Risk Disclosure: Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing one’s financial security or lifestyle. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

Hypothetical Performance Disclosure: Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. For example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program despite trading losses are material points that can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program that cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all of which can adversely affect trading results.
