Free order-flow indicators for NinjaTrader 8, reviewed (2026)
“Free” is the most-searched word attached to NinjaTrader order flow, and the most misunderstood. Here is what “free” actually means on NT8, what a genuinely useful order-flow indicator has to show, and how to set one up without spending a dollar before you are ready.
First, what “free” really means on NinjaTrader 8
There are two separate costs people conflate: the platform license and the data feed. NinjaTrader 8 has a free license that lets you chart, run indicators, and trade in simulation indefinitely. That license is genuinely free. What it does not include is real-time market data. Order flow is impossible without it. To build a footprint you need per-trade bid-ask data, which comes from a feed such as Rithmic, CQG, Kinetick, or Interactive Brokers Level 2. Some of those carry a monthly fee; some are bundled when you trade through a broker.
So when you search for a “free order-flow indicator,” the honest answer is: the indicator itself can be free and can run on the free NT8 license, but you will still need a data feed underneath it. Any tool that claims to give you order flow with zero data is selling you a delayed or synthetic picture, useless for reading aggression in real time.
The four things a real order-flow indicator must show
Plenty of “free” downloads are really just dressed-up volume bars. A tool earns the name order flow only if it shows all four of these:
- Footprint (volume-at-price). Buy and sell volume at every price level inside each bar, not just total volume. This is the core of the whole discipline. If you are new to it, start with our what is a footprint chart guide.
- Delta. Net of ask-side minus bid-side volume, both per bar and cumulative. Delta is how you tell effort from result.
- Imbalances. Where one side traded heavily over the other on a diagonal: the fingerprint of an aggressor stepping in.
- Absorption. Heavy volume hitting a level that refuses to move. The signature of a large passive participant defending price.
An indicator that shows only two of these will leave you guessing on the other half of every bar. The whole point of order flow is to remove guesswork, so completeness matters more than any single flashy feature.
Free vs. paid: where the line actually sits
NinjaTrader sells its own Order Flow+ suite, which is excellent but sits behind a paid plan or a Lifetime license. That price tag is what sends most traders searching for alternatives. The realistic middle ground is a third-party indicator that runs on the free NT8 license and renders the four signals above automatically. You pay for the tool, not the platform, and you keep your data feed separate.
Before you weigh tools against each other, read our honest comparison of NT8 order-flow indicators, which lays out the real options by feature and cost rather than by marketing copy. The goal is to match the feature set to how you actually trade, not to chase the longest feature list.
How to set one up step by step
Whatever tool you land on, the setup pattern is the same:
- Install NinjaTrader 8 and activate the free license.
- Connect a data feed that carries bid-ask volume. In simulation you can often use the bundled feed to learn the mechanics before you pay for live data.
- Import the indicator’s .zip through Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On.
- Add it to a chart, set your tick or volume bar size, and confirm the footprint is rendering bid-ask numbers, not just totals.
- Spend your first sessions in simulation, naming each signal out loud as it prints.
This is also the right moment to download a reference you can keep beside the chart. The free Imprint cheat sheet labels the four signals so you are not second-guessing what you are looking at while you learn.
Where Imprint fits
Imprint Flow is a third-party order-flow indicator built for NinjaTrader 8 that runs on the free NT8 license. It renders the footprint, highlights imbalances and absorption, and plots per-bar and cumulative delta automatically: the four signals above, on one chart. It is a visualization tool, not a signal service: it shows you what the tape is doing and leaves the decision to you. Once you can read the footprint, layering in the patterns from our order-flow strategies guide turns the picture into a process.
