How to read cumulative delta (CVD) on NinjaTrader 8

Cumulative delta is the running sum of per-bar delta across the session.
Cumulative delta is the running sum of per-bar delta across the session.

Delta is the difference between buying and selling pressure. Cumulative delta (CVD) tracks it across the session, and when it diverges from price, it’s one of the most reliable warnings in order flow. Here’s how to read it on NinjaTrader 8.

What is delta?

Per-bar delta = volume traded at the ask (aggressive buyers) minus volume at the bid (aggressive sellers). Positive delta means buyers were more aggressive in that bar; negative means sellers were.

What is cumulative delta (CVD)?

Cumulative delta adds each bar’s delta together across the session, giving a running tally of net aggression. A rising CVD line means net buying is building; falling means net selling.

The key signal: delta divergence

The highest-value read is divergence: price makes a new high but CVD does not. The new high happened without net new buying behind it. That’s a warning the move is hollow. The same in reverse at lows often marks exhaustion and a potential bounce. Pair it with absorption at the level for a stronger read.

The trap: how delta is calculated

On most NT8 setups, delta is estimated using the tick rule from Level 1 data, which is accurate live and on tick-replay history but is an approximation, not exchange-reported aggressor data. It’s reliable for reading direction; don’t treat it as exact to the contract.

Reading it on NinjaTrader 8

Imprint Flow shows per-bar delta in a grid under every bar and tracks cumulative delta across the session, so divergences are easy to spot without a separate oscillator. See the full toolkit in the order-flow guide.

What is cumulative delta (CVD)?
A running total of per-bar delta (aggressive buying minus selling) across a session. It shows whether net buying or selling pressure is building.
What is delta divergence?
When price makes a new high or low but cumulative delta doesn’t confirm, signalling the move lacks real participation and may reverse.
Is NinjaTrader 8 delta accurate?
Delta is typically estimated via the tick rule from Level 1 data. It’s reliable for reading direction and divergence, but it’s an approximation, not exchange-reported aggressor volume.
How do I see cumulative delta on NinjaTrader 8?
Use an order-flow indicator like Imprint Flow, which displays per-bar delta and tracks cumulative delta across the session.

Risk Disclosure: Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing one’s financial security or lifestyle. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

Hypothetical Performance Disclosure: Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. For example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program despite trading losses are material points that can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program that cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all of which can adversely affect trading results.
